About PDF to Word
Turn a PDF into an editable Word (DOCX) document. The converter reads the text, fonts and positions stored in the PDF, works out paragraphs, headings, columns and tables, and rebuilds them as normal Word content instead of placing text in floating boxes. Pages that are scans are read with OCR.
The formats involved, when to use this conversion, and where it runs.
PDF is a fixed-layout document format designed to look the same on every device. It is built for viewing and printing rather than editing.
Word documents (DOC/DOCX) are editable documents with styles, tables and images.
Editing contracts, reports, CVs and forms that you only have as a PDF, without retyping them.
Converted on our servers with our PDF conversion service. The file travels over HTTPS and is deleted automatically afterwards.
Desktop, tablet, or mobile—use the same workflow on any device.

Differences between the two formats that affect the result.
PDF stores positioned text rather than flowing paragraphs, so complex layouts (multi-column pages, tables, forms) may need manual cleanup after conversion. Pages with little or no selectable text are run through English OCR, which handles clear printed text but not handwriting or other languages.
Each page goes through the same steps on our servers.
Text, font names, sizes and colours are read from the PDF and mapped to fonts Word has available, so most documents keep their look.
Paragraphs, headings, lists and multi-column layouts are detected from how the text is positioned on the page.
Tables are detected from ruling lines and text alignment and rebuilt as real Word tables you can edit.
Images embedded in the PDF are extracted and placed in the document.
Pages with almost no selectable text (fewer than about 50 characters) are treated as scans and read with English OCR.
Known limitations of PDF to Word conversion.
Complex layouts such as magazines, brochures and pages with text over images may need manual tidying.
Tables without ruling lines are harder to detect and can come out as plain paragraphs.
OCR is English-only and works best on clean, straight scans; handwriting is not recognised. Proofread OCR text before relying on it.
If the conversion service is unavailable, the converter falls back to a Word file that contains each page as an image. That file looks right but its text cannot be edited; try again later if this happens.

This conversion runs on ToolzStack servers: your file is uploaded over HTTPS, converted, and kept only so that you can download the result. An automated cleanup job then deletes it (see the Privacy Policy for the current retention period).

Common answers so you can keep moving.
Yes. Pages with little or no selectable text are run through English OCR, so their text becomes editable. Clear, straight scans of printed text give the best results; handwriting and other languages are not recognised reliably.
DOCX, the format used by Word 2007 and later, Google Docs and LibreOffice Writer.
That is the fallback used when the main conversion service could not process the file. Try again later; if it keeps happening with one PDF, report it with the Report a Bug button.

Some change is possible because PDF and Word store data differently. Keep the original file until you have checked the result.

Make sure the file really is PDF (renaming an extension does not change the format) and that it opens correctly on your device. Password-protected, DRM-protected or corrupted files are rejected. If the file is very large, try again with a smaller one.
